10 essential commands every dog must know — sit, stay, come, heel and more. Step by step guide from certified trainers.
Why Every Dog Needs These Commands
A dog that knows basic commands is a safer, happier dog. These 10 commands are the foundation of all good behavior and can literally save your dog's life in dangerous situations.
🐕 Training Tip: Always use positive reinforcement — treats, praise and play. Never punish failures. Reward success immediately!
The 10 Must-Know Dog Commands
1. Sit — Hold a treat above your dog's nose, move it back over their head. Their bottom will naturally lower. Say 'sit' the moment they do. Reward immediately.
2. Stay — Ask your dog to sit, open your palm toward them, say 'stay' and take one step back. Return and reward. Gradually increase distance.
3. Come (Recall) — Crouch down, open your arms, say 'come!' enthusiastically. When they reach you, give a massive reward. This command can save their life!
4. Heel — Walk with your dog on your left. When they pull, stop completely. Only move forward when the leash is loose. Be consistent every walk.
5. Leave It — Place a treat on the floor, cover with your hand. When your dog stops trying and looks at you, say 'leave it' and give a different treat from your other hand.
6. Drop It — When your dog has something in their mouth, offer a high-value treat. When they drop it, give the treat and say 'drop it.'
7. Down — Ask your dog to sit, hold a treat at their nose and slowly lower it to the floor. When they lie down, say 'down' and reward.
8. Place / Go to Bed — Point to their bed, say 'place.' Guide them there with a treat. Once on the mat, reward. Build duration before releasing.
9. Off — When your dog jumps, turn your back completely. Only give attention when all four paws are on the floor.
10. Watch Me — Hold a treat at your eye level, say 'watch me.' When your dog makes eye contact, reward. This establishes focus and attention.
🏆 Pro Tip: Practice each command 5 minutes daily. Consistency beats long sessions. End every session on a success!
